Alison Blanchard (Corri English) has been accepted to a prestigious medical
school. Her financial aid hasn’t kicked in yet, so she sleeps in one of the
unused hospital rooms on an abandoned floor. When she begins Gross Anatomy, the
class where med students are required to slice up their first cadaver, Alison
promptly faints away at the sight of the corpse on the table. It’s that of a
young woman, with slashes on her face which appear to be self-inflicted. After
she comes to, Alison is looked after by Dr. Blackwell, the physician who teaches
the class, who tells her that she gets to get right back in there--get back on
the horse, so to speak.
When Alison returns to the class, she begin to realize that there’s something
very odd about this cadaver. She gets the uneasy feeling that it may not be
completely dead. Creepy little signs that the body itself is still alive have
easy medical explanations, such as gas, among other things. But what about the
unusual feelings regarding the dead woman’s spirit--which Alison senses is still
lurking around? And then various people begin to disappear, and Alison probably
starts wishing she had gone into dentistry, instead. Co-written, produced and
directed by Jason Todd Ipson, Unrest is a fun little horror movie that was one of the
original Eight Films To Die For horror movie festival.
Unrest is primarily a mystery/thriller. While there’s copious amount of gore,
it’s mostly in the clinical scenes of corpses being dissected--and it’s more
gross than horrifying. Think of the movie as being Grey’s Anatomy meets the
Re-Animator and you have a good idea of its tone. And despite its brief, 80 plus
minutes running time, the film still tends to drag in places. But Unrest is
watchable because of lead actress Corri English. The entire movie basically
rests on her shoulders, and she handles the weight very well. English is very
sympathetic as Alison--to the point where you’d want to follow her anywhere,
including to the bottom of a yucky formaldehyde tank filled with body parts.
