"Knight Time"
A Five Star Episode from Superman: The Animated Series-Volume Three

Oooh, that's pretty. After Superman takes down a rocket-riding super villain named Roxy Rocket, she tells him that she decided to try her luck in Metropolis because Gotham City has become so congested with crime after the Batman disappeared. Disturbed by this news, Superman travels to Gotham City, where he finds Robin just barely keeping a lid on the crime wave that has erupted in the Dark Knight’s absence. Despite Superman’s helping hand with a gang of armed thugs, Robin is at first reluctant to admit that there even is a problem--until The Man Of Steel asks, "Where’s Bruce?" Robin finally reveals that Bruce Wayne/Batman is indeed missing, having abruptly disappeared after making a video call to Lucius Fox. What set off the suspicion in everyone who is close to Bruce Wayne is that when he made the call, Wayne was smiling and joking!

Now we know this isn't the real Batman...he's smiling!!!! Superman decides that the best way to get to the bottom of things is by impersonating Batman. What follows is a very funny series of scenes as the normally upbeat and chipper Superman tries to emulate the Batman’s dark and gloomy persona--with varying degrees of success, especially during the hysterically funny moment when Superman, dressed as Batman, breaks into a broad smile--until he realizes his mistake and quickly becomes the grim Dark Knight once more. This play-acting culminates in a great scene where the dreaded Bane comes face to face with Batman. Armed with a new super powerful form of his deadly body-building venom, Bane threatens to break Batman’s back…only there’s a major glitch in that plan when Bane unwittingly finds himself battling Superman, instead.

Holy flesh-melting plasma, Batman! Knight Time manages to be a lot of fun without ever going over the top. It’s a perfect sequel to World’s Finest, the Superman/Batman team-up that was one of the highlights of Superman: The Animated Series - Volume Two. When the cause of Batman’s disappearance is finally revealed, it offers yet another major surprise while still making sense within the storyline. And it’s enjoyable to see Superman working with Robin as he interacts with Batman’s dark world and some of the depraved characters who lurk its shadows.
