"Haunted"
A Five Star Episode from Dead Like Me: The Second Season

George goes uncover on Halloween. In what would turn out to be the final show of the series, "Haunted" takes place on Halloween, which was a holiday that George enjoyed as a child, but not for what you'd think. As a kid, she eagerly went trick or treating just so she could get a look inside people's houses. In flashback segments, a ten-year-old George becomes flummoxed when the owner of a house that she visits for Halloween leaves a bowl of candy out on the porch for the trick or treaters, denying her the opportunity to sneak a peek inside his abode. So angry with this moron for not following the rules of the holiday, George kicks over the bowl of candy while she leaves his residence.

In the present day, the adult George--specifically, the undead reaper George--doesn't care too much for Halloween. She sees it as being just another excuse for people to dress up in weird costumes with gory make up. It's no longer a big deal for her. However, once she arrives at Der Waffle Haus on this Halloween Sunday, George discovers a reaper legend concerning All Hallows Eve when Rube hands her a mask and tells her to wear it. Apparently, there is some truth in the old legend that the dead walk the earth on Halloween, because a reaper's real face from their previous life will be revealed for only that day. And since George is dead just over a year, and reaping in her home town, Rube thinks it would be wise for her to wear the mask, just in case George should run into anybody from her past. A further ominious sign of the day to come occurs when Rube gives his reapers their yellow post-its: all of their reaps take place within the same neighborhood, and the deaths themselves happen very closely after each other.

Creepy pumpkins aren't the only things to watch out for on this All Hallow's Eve. First airing on Halloween, "Haunted" is a fittingly chilling story for this spooky holiday. It effectively creates a sense of menace within the seemingly innocent practice of going trick or treating--this episode may actually make you think twice about trick or treating: either welcoming trick or treaters to your home, or knocking on the door of that strange house down the road. Yet what really makes this episode for me is the ending, where George has a fateful meeting in a graveyard. If "Haunted" is truly the final episode of Dead Like Me, then this series couldn't have ended on a more moving, wondrous and ultimately uplifting final scene.
