"Exodus Parts One & Two"
Two Five Star Episodes from Lost: The First Season

The others send smoke signals for a pizza with extra cheese. While the survivors help put the finishing touches on the raft that Michael designed and built, they are stunned by the appearance of the enigmatic Frenchwoman Rousseau (Mira Furlan), who simply wanders into their camp early one morning with a warning that the others are coming. The others are the mysterious unseen group who live somewhere within the island, and who pose a constant threat to the airplane crash survivors. They came for Rousseau's infant daughter some 16 years ago, and before they did, a column of black smoke heralded their incursion. Rousseau adds that the others will always attack at night. It's not hard for everyone to believe her claims, for an ominous black column of smoke can now be seen rising from behind the distant mountains on the island.

Just put the mango down, very slowly. The survivors immediately swing into action. They work hard to get the raft launched as planned with Michael, his son Walt, Sawyer and Jin aboard. Once the boat is safely away, everyone will then evacuate to the caves for safety. Jack ultimately wants to hide everyone from the others inside whatever underground shelter that lays beyond the hatch that Locke and Boone found, but were never able to get open. Rousseau agrees to lead Jack, Locke, Kate, Hurley and another survivor named Arzt into the forbidden region known as the Dark Territory to an equally foreboding place known as Black Rock so that they may retrieve sticks of dynamite that she says are stored there. They'll use the dynamite to blow open the hatch, but Jack, Kate and their comrades may soon need a lot more than that to help them: for after several weeks of silence, the eerie howls of the gargantuan creature can be heard in the jungle as it once again goes on the prowl.

Damn it Locke, how many times I warned you about trying to dig to China?! Exodus Parts One And Two are the final two episodes of the first season of Lost, and when viewed together, they play like a movie (part two actually runs over the usual forty plus minute running time, clocking in at just under 90 minutes). Taut, gripping and well written, Exodus is a satisfying coda that provides pay offs to many of the mysteries that have been brought up over the first season, as well as begin to tie together many of the various ongoing plot threads. Both the present day story and the flashbacks are equally fascinating. The flashbacks show the fateful day when all of the main characters board their doomed Oceanic flight, and Hurley's story, about his desperate struggles not to miss his flight, is really funny. Also sidesplitting are the present day scenes with guest star Daniel Roebuck, who plays Arzt, the nerdy high school science teacher who comes along to help handle the dynamite. His rant to Hurley about how he doesn't fit in with the "merry band of adventurers" is a classic moment. Although several storylines are brought to a close, Exodus Part Two ends with a couple of major cliffhangers, but even with this, it's still an engaging, rollicking adventure that's fun to watch over and over again.
