Howard took his own life at age 30 in 1936, shortly after receiving the
bad news that his ailing mother would not survive another night. Yet while
Howard may have passed on, Conan endured throughout the 20th century and into
the 21st. Howard’s stories were soon re-discovered by a new generation of
readers, who were lured in by the provocative, exotic artwork of artist Frank
Frazetta. Other writers would spin
new tales of Conan’s exploits in new novels and comic books. And in 1982, Hollywood
finally gave the Cimmerian his due. Listed here are the movies made from the
works of Robert E. Howard: Conan The Barbarian, it’s sequel Conan The Destroyer,
and even two films made from lesser Howard characters: Red Sonja and Kull The
Conqueror. There’s also The Whole Wide World, a romantic drama based on the
real-life affair between Howard and the woman who perhaps knew him best. Largely shunned in
the small Texas town where he was born and raised because of his reclusive and
eccentric ways, it’s ironic that Robert E. Howard achieved his
greatest fame long after his death, thanks to the rich and imaginative worlds
that emerged from the well-spring of his creative mind.
