The first thing that one notices with the special features
on the Two-Disc Deluxe Edition of Batman Begins is the lack of an audio
commentary by the filmmakers. Yet this is more than made up for by the second
disc, which is loaded with detailed making of documentaries on the film's
production. This second disc, along with the movie itself, makes this DVD set well worth buying.
But, let's first look at the special features on Disc One:
The Trailer - A slightly more detailed trailer that hints at the fact that Christian Bale will become Batman.
And now the Special Features On Disc Two:
The second disc starts out with a special comic book that was written by David
Goyer, the film's co-writer. The comic deals with Batman hunting the Scarecrow.
You move through the comic frame by frame, which is cool. It comes complete with
sound effects and moving images (such as the rain that steadily falls around
Batman). If you click on certain images within the panels of the comic, they
will take you either to special Easter Egg features, or one of the 'making of'
features. This will only work in the ROM-Drive of a PC.
After the comic you reach the menu for the special features:
Batman: The Journey Begins - Features interviews with director Christopher Nolan
and co-writer David Goyer as they discuss the early days of the production,
writing the script, and designing the film. It also goes on to detail the
casting, as well. Runs 13:45
Shaping Mind And Body - looks at the fight scenes, which used the Keysi Fighting
Method. It also gives a thorough look at the blocking out of several of the
fight scenes in the movie by the stunt men and stunt coordinator. Runs 12:45
Cape And Cowl - examines the Batsuit. It has some great behind the scenes shots
showing the creation of the Batsuit and cape. Runs 8:00
Batman: The Tumbler - looks at the development of the new Batmobile, from a
little model that was kit-bashed by Nolan to the life-sized version with running
engine. It also deals with the challenges of filming the chase scene between the
Tumbler and the Gotham Police through the streets of Chicago, which doubled for
Gotham. Runs 13:35
Path To Discovery - unveils the hardship of filming in Iceland, which provided
the icy wasteland where Bruce Wayne trained with the League Of Shadows. Runs 14:00
Saving Gotham City - deals with the climax of the film, as Batman battles to
save his city. Some great behind the scenes shots of the special effects, most
of which were done with models. Runs 12:50
Genesis Of The Bat - gives an overview of the history of the Batman in comics
over the last 60 years. Runs 14:50
Confidential Files - interactive section that gives information on the people,
places and gadgets in the Bat-universe. Very well detailed.
Art Gallery - displays the various publicity artworks used for the film.
Tankman Begins - Jimmy Fallon stars in a five-minute spoof of Batman Begins that
served as the opening for the 2005 MTV movie awards, which he was the host.
Fallon needs somebody to give him a ride to the awards show, and Batman shows
up in the Tumbler and takes him on a wild ride through Gotham City, using footage
from Batman Begins. While it's not as memorable as the MTV Movie Award parody of Spider-Man
starring Jack Black a few years ago, it still has a few good laughs.
Gotham City Rises - looks at the design of Gotham City and its construction,
through the combination of computer imagery, detailed models, interior sets
(they built vast sections of Gotham City streets within a massive aircraft
hangar in England), and exterior shots of Chicago. It also looks at the creation
of Wayne Manor and the Batcave. Runs 12:45
